The University of Jordan has always been up to the quest; Future endeavors of the E-learning
Subsequent to Covid-19 pandemic, Jordan undertook drastic measures including the concepts of social distancing and the subsequent lockdown to try to avert a calamity. These measures involved closure of all teaching institutions all over the kingdom. The University of Jordan was the first to heed and respond positively due to the availability of a good infrastructure including an on line learning system (E-learning) already in place and the existing programs and teaching courses necessary to run such a system. The teaching staff was already familiar with the concept of E-learning. The blended learning was already started. Therefore, the University of Jordan was very successful in continuing the teaching process in an effective and satisfying manner. The students were kept in an active teaching environment without any interruption to the teaching process and they were through different assessment tools including interactive sessions using Microsoft teams, zoom, WhatsApp, quizzes and formal online examinations.
The capabilities and efficiencies of the performance of the University of Jordan in such an urgent electronic teaching necessity raised the need to further develop and improve these tools to a degree that put our university at the top of the national and regional levels and compete internationally in an efficacious way.
The adopting of an integral, modern and comprehensive E-learning system for both under and postgraduate studies is an essential step that is needed for an institution with very high reputation like the University of Jordan. This system can scrap face-to-face lectures and allow active discussion and interaction between teachers and learners from different countries and cultures. It also gives both the university and learners the flexibility needed for time and place schedules.
The E-learning programs and educational materials can remain accessible to the students for a period of time determined by the institution. This feature gives an advantage over the traditional in-campus teaching.
The distant learning will encourage students to be enrolled in the University easier than the traditional system. This is applicable equally on national students living far away from Amman and on international students. The electronic system along with the high reputation of the university will both act to encourage such enrollment.
This comprehensive program can be very efficacious even to those technical specialties including engineering and medical studies. We, at the faculty of medicine and I personally have a very adequate, reassuring and rewarding feedback from the medical students, both 5th and 6th years. Nearly all students have a satisfying teaching experience and a significant proportion of my students indicated better and more detailed teaching using audiovisual recordings of clinical rounds, surgical operations and individual case managements. They have indicated that details of the surgical techniques recorded and the commentaries made were better than those experienced with the in-campus traditional teaching because they were more obvious and could be repeated as many times as needed. These combined tools quenched their educational needs. Moreover, the hospital policies and infection control guidelines usually limit the number of students allowed in operative theatres making it impossible for all students to watch all surgical procedures. This problem can easily be solved with the E-learning modalities.
Regarding assessment of the students' skills and ILO (intended learning objectives); they can be adequately assessed using on line real-time video interview, interaction and demonstration.
As one would argue that E-learning can't totally replace in-campus teaching, I would say that those few issues can be solved with complementary intermittent campus visits during the curriculum and to be arranged in an efficient and feasible way.
Even graduation ceremonies can be done with animation and conducted in a very professional way to mimic the traditional graduation.
Cambridge is the first UK University to set out its plans for the coming academic year and decided there will be no face-to-face lectures during the next year. Also, the University of Manchester has revealed all of its lectures for the start of the coming academic year will be delivered online.
The power of the E-learning in attaining the students' skills and experience required can match the traditional teaching. This is supported by the power of the media which influences and manipulates the whole planet attitudes, cultures and views.
The availability of well-trained teaching staff, modern electronic programs and the back-up IT department will all facilitate this process. I am pretty confident that our university's performance will be beyond vilification.
By conducting a comprehensive and effective E-learning system, the tuition fees should not differ from those of the traditional teaching. The University of Jordan can successfully perform such a system, helping national, regional and international students to achieve their future qualifications.
These are my personal views.
I have no conflicts of interests to disclose.
