Political, Economic and Social Transformations in Jordan Conference kicks off at UJ

Deputizing His Majesty King Abdullah II, Prime Minister Dr. Abdullah Nsour on Tuesday inaugurated at UJ the "political, economic and social transformations in Jordan: 1984 - 2014" conference.

 

The conference is organized by UJ Center for Strategic Studies (CSS) to mark its 30th founding anniversary.

 

Senate President Abdul Rauf Rawabdeh and a number of high-ranking officials and interested parties attended the opening ceremony.

 

"The 30 years that have elapsed since the emergence of the center have witnessed tremendous events” Nsour said in his speech at the opening ceremony.

 

He also added that 1989 was exceptional in Jordan’s history as it marked the reintroduction of political life in Jordan and the release of public freedoms.

 

In 1989, Jordan restored parliamentary life and martial law was cancelled, along with other laws that restricted freedom of expression and political orientations such as the Anti-Communism Law.

 

On the Jordanian-Israeli peace deal, Nsour said that the event has had its deep political, economic and social impact on Jordan.

 

UJ President, Prof. Ekhleif Tarawneh said in his speech that a deep manifestation of Jordan’s reality, which is inseparable from the Arab nor the regional or international realities, leads us to question to what extent were the economic, political and social plans have been successful.

 

Tarawneh also stressed the urgent need to carry out a comprehensive and objective assessment of economic, political and social changes of Jordan.

 

CSS Director Musa Shteiwi said the center was established by a Royal Decree in 1984 as an academic unit concerned with research on national, Arab and regional political, economic, security and international relations. It aims to provide decision-makers with studies and data to help them make more rational and objective decisions.

 

Over a period of two days and nine sessions, the conference is set to discuss, several issues related to security and political transformations from regional and international perspectives, in addition to economic, investment, public debt and demographic transformations that took place in Jordan .

 

The conferees also discusses outlooks for Jordan’s economy, political reform and the development and challenges of political life, natural resources, agriculture, and human development.
