52nd Anniversary of UJ’s First Intake of Students

This year marks the 52nd anniversary of UJ’s first intake of students, ushering in a new phase in the development of education in our beloved country.

 

On 14 December 1962, 149 male students, 18 female students, arrived at what was then a two-building campus.   

 

In spite of the scarcity of financial and human resources, UJ started with 18 faculty members and a proposed budget equal to JOD 25000 in the founding phase, raised to JOD 50000 when the academic year begun.

 

52 years have passed after the foundation of UJ. Today, UJ is serving more than 44000 students in 19 faculties with a total budget of more than JOD 100 million.  

 

The growing number of humanities, health and scientific faculties, and educational centers and facilities speaks of this place as a distinguished scientific edifice.

 

Currently, UJ offers 80 undergraduate programs, 8 vocational diplomas, 17  higher specialization programs in medicine and dentistry, 103 master's programs, and 32 PhD programs.

 

UJ has been successful in the applied scientific research field and in networking with the local communities. It has an an integrated set of programs and projects oriented towards the development of economic and social sectors in different parts of the Kingdom.

 

To UJ, the cultural aspects and extracurricular activities are just as important as academics.

 

Moreover, UJ aimed to create opportunities for international cooperation. Now a days, 4200 international students from 86 nationalities study in the various faculties of the university.

 

One of the most prominent achievements of UJ is its branch in the city of Aqaba which seeks to offer higher education and bring about progress to city.

 

In addition to obtaining global rankings, the university set up a strategy to become a world class university came into force in 2013 and will continue until 2018.

 

Among the most prominent UJ alumnus, HRH Princess Alia Al Hussein, former Jordanian prime ministers Dr. Abd Al-Raouf Al-Rawabdeh, Dr. Marouf Al Bakhit and Dr. Fayez Tarawneh, in addition to a number of elite political, social, economic, educational, military and security leaders.

 

International figures who attended UJ includes the former Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari who received his Bachelor Degree in Political Science from UJ  in 1976, and the current Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu a former visiting researcher at UJ.
