Experts Discuss Use of Treated Wastewater in Agriculture

Experts and academics stress the shared responsibility among stakeholders in the water, agriculture, health and environment sectors when it comes to using treated wastewater in agriculture in Jordan.

 

This came during a seminar held at the Dead Sea on Sunday to deliberate on the “Safe Use of Wastewater in Agriculture” project.

 

The Coordinator of the project Prof. Arwa Al Hamaydeh and the two researchers Prof. Maha Al Halahsheh and Prof. Ghada Kassab displayed stages and results of the project which is implemented under the support of the World Health Organization (WHO).

 

The project aims to reduce consumption of water in agriculture sector, estimated at about 50%-60% of the available water sources. Moreover, the project is expected to increase the volume of treated wastewater reuse in irrigation to about 232 million m3 by 2020.

 

The one-day workshop, was attended by officials from the ministries of Agriculture, Water and Irrigation, and Environment, in addition to representatives of the Water Authority, Jordan Valley Authority, and World Health Organization, and a number of faculty members from the Faculty of Agriculture at the University.
