UJ Utilizes Solar Power to Cool Campus Facility | Tuesday, June 23, 2015 | + font More | - font less | | The Hamdi Mango Center for Scientific Research (HMCSR) is now using solar energy for air conditioning. The Center is the first facility on campus to utilize ‘solar cooling’. The solar cooling system, which has been installed at HMCSR to cool the laboratory rooms, also serves as a test stand for the scientific investigation. The solar cooling project comes within the UJ’s efforts to bring solar power to campus and train students on sustainable energy applications. The cooling system, which uses flat plat collectors, has a rated cooling capacity of 8 kW, where the cost of this project has reached JOD 60,000. This project sheds light on one of the new applications of solar power: the use of solar thermal power to operate an adsorption refrigeration chiller repaired and tested under Jordanian climate. Water is heated by the solar thermally flat plate collectors which have been installed at a slope of 45° and a south orientation in order to increase the efficiency of utilizing solar energy during the whole year, then re-cooled at the adsorption chiller which consists of a water/silica gel and used to cool the labs at the center. The project is supported by the Deanship of Academic Research and led by Prof. Ahmad Al Salaymeh and Prof. Abeer Al Bawab, Dean of Academic Research. The German Technical Cooperation Agency (GTZ) has been also providing technical support for the project. The utilized technology can be used for heating in winter. Water resulting from the system is utilizable as well. It noteworthy that a center for renewable energy has been inaugurated at the Faculty of Engineering recently. The purpose of the center is to train students, technician, engineers and professionals on renewable energy topics.
