UJ recently hosted a live broadcast of the consideration of the UN Committee against Torture’s of the third periodic report of Jordan on its implementation of the provisions of the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment.

The live webcast from Geneva was displayed at the conference hall at Prince Al Hussien Bin Abdullah II School of International Studies at the University and viewed by representatives of a number of Jordanian human rights organizations.

Following the event, Chairman of the Jordanian Society for Human Rights, Dr. Suleiman Sweiss indicated in a press statement the importance of the live transmission in informing human rights activists in Jordan about the mechanism by which international control over human rights is practiced.

According to Sweiss, discussions over the report have a large degree of interest as it reflects the government’s  response to recommendations of the Committee against Torture which was issued at the conclusion of the consideration of the second periodic report of Jordan in 2010.

The delegation of Jordan to the meeting included representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of the Interior, Ministry of Social Development, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Labour, and the Permanent Mission of Jordan to the United Nations Office at Geneva.

The report was presented by Wasfi Abdallah Aly Ayyad, Director of the Directorate for Human Rights and Human Security at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
