With the start of the spring semester at the University of Jordan (UJ), more than 50 university students launched an initiative on Sunday to offer financial aid to students who cannot afford the tuition fees, organisers said.

The “One Pulse” initiative aims at helping students to pay their tuition fees and encouraging them to complete their degrees instead of postponing their studies and getting jobs due to lack of funds, explained Islam Shaqboua, a university student who is one of the campaign's organisers.

Students who postpone their studies for financial reasons sometimes become “uninterested” in pursuing their degree later, she told The Jordan Times.

“Our goal is to collect around JD10,000 over one week. If each student contributes JD1, it would make a difference,” Shaqboua said.

The initiative's procedure for covering students' tuition fees involves collecting from students around campus over the course of the week and transferring the money to the university’s bank accounts, according to its organisers.

“As soon as we collect the required money for the first case, we will go to the bank and transfer the amount for the student,” said Shaqboua.

The initiative seeks to help 22 students from different faculties at the university, she said, noting that they were selected randomly in cooperation with the deanship of student affairs, which has information on students in need of support.

The initiative will continue until Thursday, according to its organisers, who said volunteers will be collecting money on campus, wearing vests to identify themselves and holding donation boxes.

Volunteers will mainly be present at the deanship of student affairs to collect donations, Shaqboua said.

“All students at the university have the right to continue their education, they deserve to study. If we can help them, we should.”
