UJ, Lund University Hold Combined Symposium

The Faculty of Medicine at UJ and its counterpart at Lund University, Sweden, on Thursday, April 21, held a combined symposium, titled: “Neurosurgery Update-Bridging Science”.

At the first of its kind event between the two schools, the speakers addressed concurrent tracks in Neurosurgery.

Speakers at the symposium included neurologists and neurosurgeon from the Jordanian universities, Ministry of Health, Royal Medical Services and the private sector.

The main objective of the symposium is to mark progress and development in both clinical and experimental research concerning Neurosurgery.

UJ President Prof. Azmi Mahafzah said continuing professional development in the medical sector aims at developing health services provided to the public.

Such events, according to him, allows for keeping pace with the latest in the neurosurgery and neurosurgery science fields.
Prof. Islam Massad, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine noted that the event is part of the Faculty’s approach to focus on holding workshops and scientific activies utilizing facilities such as the SONO school and clinical skills center, and by utilizing faculty expertise.

Massad also announced that the Faculty will host the Arab Simulation Conference in Medical Education 2016 (ASCME 2016) in October.

President of the symposium, Dr. Walid Maani spoke about the history of neurosurgery in Jordan, the high level reached by the University Hospital in this area, and the number of neurosurgical procedures that have been successfully conducted.

Maani also referred to the deep rooted relation between the two countries and the visit of their Majesties King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden to the Jordan University hospital in 1989 as part of their state visit to Jordan.

Dr. Abdulrahman Al Shudifat, Chairman of the symposium’s organizing committee, said: “the meeting  is the result of long-standing cooperation between UJ and Lund University”.

The event was comprised of four sessions preceded by a hands-on workshop at the faculty’s laboratories.

Many interesting Neurosurgical topics were presented and discussed by leading experts from Jordan and Sweden.
