Nabataean Clay Lamps: A New Book by Professor Nabil Khairy

A new book by UJ Professor Emeritus of Graeco-Roman Archaeology Nabil Ibrahim Khairy unearths the material heritage of the Nabateans has been lunched recently.
 
The studied items shed light on the different cultural aspects of the Nabataean society, which had been in close contact with the contemporaneous world of the Mediterranean Sea and the Arabian Peninsula.
 
The 128-pages refereed book analysis the different clay lamps that were used by the Nabataeans and how that the artificial lighting they provided proves that daily activities in this prominent proto-Arabic kingdom did not cease after sunset or in dark environments.
 
The book is published by the British Archaeological Reports (BAR), an academic archaeology series founded in 1974 and has over 3400 titles. BAR has two series (International and British) and published in five different languages (English, Italian, Spanish, French and German).
 
Professor Nabil I. Khairy received his PhD from London University in 1975. He has established himself as one of the leading classical archaeologists of the country in his time. He has received many international awards and is reputed as an excavator of the Nabataean metropole of Petra.
 
The former Dean of UJ Faculty of  Archaeology and Tourism, is also the Chief Editor of the SNC International Refereed Bulletin.
