The University of Jordan (UJ) on Tuesday, September 27th, marked the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons by highlighting the dangers posed by nuclear weapons to humanity and life.

This came during an event organized at UJ in collaboration with the Global Network PNND (Parliamentarians for Nuclear Nonproliferation and Disarmament) and the Nuclear Forum / Arab Institute for Security Studies.

A recorded speech by the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon was also aired during the ceremony. The speech was delivered by the UN chief on September 26th to mark the day.

The event was patronized by UJ president Prof. Azmi Mahafzah and attended by Former Prime Minister Marouf Bakhit.

The ceremony included a presentation of the famous film "The man who saved the world."

On the sidelines of the event, a photo exhibition was held showcasing photos documenting nuclear weapons effects on plants and human environment.

The United Nations' General Assembly designated the 26th of September as the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons.

This Day provides an occasion for the world community to reaffirm its commitment to global nuclear disarmament as a high priority. It also provides an opportunity to educate the public about the real benefits of eliminating such weapons, and the social and economic costs of perpetuating them.
