A regional training course was held this week at the University of Jordan (UJ) on "the Use of IBA Techniques to Analyze Atmospheric Aerosols".

The course, which was inaugurated by UJ Vice-president Prof. Omar Kafawin, is held within the framework of the Regional TC Project RAS/0/076 "Investigating Atmospheric Particulate Metter and Pollution Source Contributions in Urban Environments Using Nuclear Analytical Techniques (ARASIA)".

A presentation about the phases of the Project and Jordan's role in it was displayed during the inauguration ceremony.
 
The Five-day course, organized by the Department of Physics with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), took place at the van de Graaff accelerator (JUVAC), based at Hamdi Mango Center for Scientific Research.
 
The purpose of the course is to provide theoretical knowledge and build experimental capacity and skills in the utilization of different Ion Beam Analysis techniques such as the particle induced X-ray emission (PIXE) and Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS) for the Elemental compositional analysis of air particulate matter (APM) samples.

According to Prof. Hanan Saadeh, the course coordinator, the 40-hour training was delivered by experts from UJ, Italy, France, and Lebanon, and involved trainees from Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar, Yemen and Oman.
