Damhoureyeh Elected IUCN Regional Councillor for West Asia

Prof. Said Damhoureyeh, Associate Professor of Plant Ecology at the University of Jordan (UJ) Faculty of Science, has been recently elected as the Regional Councillor for West Asia at the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
 
Dr. Damhoureyeh has been representing UJ at the Jordanian National Committee for IUCN and a steering committee member at the IUCN's Commission on Ecosystem Management (CEM) for two terms.
 
Dr. Damhoureyeh was elected by the IUCN World Conservation Congress 2016, held in Hawai’i from 1 to 10 September, 2016.
 
There are twenty-four Regional Councillors, three from each of IUCN’s eight Statutory Regions.
 
Dr. Shaikha Al Dhaheri from UAE and Mr. Ayman Rabbi from Palestine were also elected to represent West Asia region along with Dr. Damhoureyeh.
 
The IUCN Regional Office for West Asia (ROWA) was established in October 2004 and covers 13 countries (Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, Syrian, Yemen and Iran in addition to the Gulf states including Bahrain, Oman, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and United Arab Emirates).
 
IUCN is the global authority on the status of the natural world and the measures needed to safeguard it.
 
Created in 1948, IUCN is the world’s largest and most diverse environmental network. It harnesses the experience, resources and reach of its 1,300 Member organizations and the input of some 16,000 experts, according to IUCN's website.
