The University of Jordan (UJ) hospital has recently recorded the implementation of a new medical procedure, and qualitative addition to the hospital’s medical achievements.
For the first in the Jordan and the region, the hospital conducted a fetal surgical procedure to open fetal bladder obstruction using laser by fetoscopy.
Maternal–fetal medicine consultant, Dr. Oqba Al-Kuran, who performed the surgery, said the 19 weeks old fetus weighed no more than 260 grams, suffered from a blockage in the urethra due to a congenital anomaly caused by the presence of a valve inside the urethra; which could cause a kidney damage, atrophy of the lungs after birth and consequently death.
Al-Kuran indicated that the 40-minute operation, increased survival rate of the fetus after birth and its ability to live a normal life without lung problems to 80%, stressing that the mother left the hospital on the same day of the operation, and the fetus’s condition will be monitored periodically.
This achievement adds to the achievements of the hospital's Maternal Fetal Medicine Unit, Jordan's leading fetal medicine unit in providing the highest level of fetal care and treatment options in the country.
