A delegation from the Rhodes Trust and the University of Oxford visited the University of Jordan (UJ) on May 23th to promote new Rhodes Scholarships to study at the University of Oxford for outstanding individuals from four Middle Eastern countries, namely, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, and Palestine.
The delegation met with UJ’s President, Prof. Azmi Mahafzah, and Director of International Relations, Dr. Rami Ali, and briefed them on the Rhodes Trust new initiative to include the Middle East. The two sides agreed to work together on a vigorous dissemination campaign to reach out to and encourage outstanding Jordanian individuals to apply. The graduate level scholarships can be either for the Masters or PhD degrees in any discipline.
An information session for UJ’s students and alumni presenting the scholarships, eligibility conditions, and the application process, which begins on July 1st 2016, was also held by the delegation. The session, attended by more than 200 interested students and alumni, was an opportunity for Rhodes alumni and current students from the University of Oxford to share their experiences and views on what it takes and means to be a Rhodes Scholar. The presentation was followed by a lively Q&A session.
Established in 1903, the Rhodes is the oldest and perhaps the most prestigious international graduate scholarship programme in the world. The Rhodes Scholarships support outstanding all-round students at the University of Oxford, and provide transformative opportunities for exceptional individuals. Nearly 8,000 Rhodes Scholars have gone on to serve at the forefront of government, the professions, commerce, the arts, education, research and other domains. They are well known advocates for expanded social justice, and have advanced the frontiers of science and medicine.
