The University of Jordan (UJ) President Prof. Azmi Mahafza met in his office with the Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism, Vladimir Voronkov.

At the meeting, Voronkov noted the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism's role and functions, adding that the UN has adopted a plan of action with more than 70 to prevent the further spread of violent extremism.

Voronkov also said that the collective and effective response to the global challenge posed by terrorism could be only achieved through cooperation and partnerships, and a comprehensive approach in which higher education institutions are influential partners.
For his part, UJ President Prof. Azmi Mahafza said that UJ has been working at all levels to confront extremism, whether through curricula, developing students' intellectual skills, establishing the principles of leadership and innovation, or through organizing counter-terrorism activities and events to raise awareness on terrorism-related issues.
The meeting took place on the sideline of the 11th Amman Security Colloquium, which is organized by the Arab Institute for Security Studies in cooperation with several governments and international organizations at the University.
The UN Counter-Terrorism Office is a new UN body established by General Assembly resolution 71/291 of 15 June 2017, which has wide powers to implement the UN General Assembly's antiterrorism mandates.
