King Abdullah II Fund for Development (KAFD) at the Deanship of Student Affairs at the University of Jordan (UJ) on Tuesday organized a dialogue session on hate speech and the acceptance of others.

 

The event featured Dean of the School of Shari'a Prof. Mohammed Al Khatib, and Journalist Aman Al Sayeh as speakers, and was moderated by KAFD Director Dr. Rami Dweiri.

 

The purpose of the event, according to the Dean of Student Affairs, was to define hate speech and the role of cultural differences in the emergence of hate speech.

 

The two sides agreed that hate speech is driven by loathing and self-rejection, adding that self-hatred can provoke feelings of hate towards others.

 

Prof. Al Khatib also spoke about the role of religion in the fight against hate speech.

 

A fruitful discussion between the guest speakers and the students took place at the end of the event, which was attended by UJ President Prof. Azmi Mahafzah, Vice-president Prof. Omar Kafawin, and Director of Media and Public Relation Department Dr. Suliaman Farajat.
