UJ Takes Part at SRTD II Project Conclusion Event

An event showcasing the achievements of the second phase of a long-term EU-funded project to support applied research in Jordan and involve the private sector in identifying research needs kicked off in Amman on Sunday, February 12.

 

The event, held to mark the end of Support to Research, Technological Development and Innovation (SRTD II) Programme, saw the participation of a UJ delegation composed of Vice President Prof. Omar Kafawin, Dean of Academic Research Prof. Shaher Momani, Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship Director Dr. Ashraf Beni Mohammed, Higher Council for Science and Technology's Liaison Officer Dr. Alia Alghwiri, School of Rehabilitation Sciences Dean Dr. Nihad Masri, Prof. Abeer. Al-Bawab, Dr. Mais Al Dughmi, as well as Hamid Mango Center researchers Tamara Qudah, Haba Zaloum, and Dr. Nihad Karablieh.

 

The overall objective of SRTD II Programme was to increase the contribution of Jordan’s research & technological development and innovation sectors to Jordan’s economic growth and employment.

 

The initiative, implemented by the Higher Council for Science and Technology (HCST), has awarded 62 grants for applied research and commercialisation in four key sectors: water, energy, food and health.

 

Partnering with 10 universities and one chamber of industry, the project has also established 11 technology transfer offices in research and business organisations in Jordan.

 

As part of this week’s activities to celebrate the project’s conclusion, organisers also marked the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, with Sunday evening dedicated to awarding cash prizes to leading research projects by young women.

 

In the health sector and in a session to showcase some of the innovative projects, Dr. Hanan Khalil from the Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST) showcased her project dubbed "Virtual Reality for People with Multiple Sclerosis ," carried out in cooperation with JUST scholar Dr. Ilham Shurman and UJ Dr. Alia Alghwiri.
