Conference on 'Jerusalem in Modern World Literature' Convenes at U

The International Conference: "Jerusalem in Modern World Literature" opened at the University of Jordan (UJ) on Tuesday, March 21.

 

The 3-day Conference was officially inaugurated by UJ's Board of Trustees Chairman Prof. Adnan Badran, Deputizing for His Royal Highness Prince Al-Hassan Bin Talal, and in presence of UJ President Prof. Azmi Mahafzah.

 

The purpose of the conference is to present the literary, intellectual and cultural heritage of the City of Jerusalem.

 

Further, it aims to celebrate the City as a symbol of peace, to explore the creative artistic accounts of the City in different languages and literary narratives, to highlight the position of the City as an icon of human co-existence, and to emphasize the human-place bond as it relates to Jerusalem.

 

The event is organized by the School of Foreign Languages in cooperation with the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA).

 

On the sidelines of the event, an exhibition was arranged showcasing photos documenting the Royal visits to the city, the Hashemite restoration of the holy sites in Jerusalem, the suffering of Jerusalemites under Israeli occupation, as well as art work depicting the Holy City as remembered and visualized by the artists.

 

The exhibition is organized by UJ in cooperation with the Jordanian Armed Forces - Arab Army, Ministry of Culture and Al Quds Cultural Forum.

 

The Conference includes 8 sessions, 68 discussion papers. Other prominent participants include Prof.  Ahmet AĞIRAKÇA, President of Mardin Artuklu University, Prof. Nabil Matar, University of Minnesota, and Karl Sabbagh, British Palestinian writer, documentary maker and publisher.
