UJ Professor Abeer Al-Bawab Honored

The University of Jordan (UJ) Professor of Chemistry Abeer Al-Bawab, was honored during a ceremony on Monday for winning the IUPAC 2021 Distinguished Women in Chemistry.

 

In his remarks during the ceremony, UJ President Prof. Abdul Karim Al-Qudah commended the achievement and congratulated Al-Bawab on being named on top of the 12 recipients of the IUPAC 2021 Distinguished Women in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering award from all over the world.

 

Initiated as part of the 2011 International Year of Chemistry celebrations, the award aims to acknowledge and promote the work of women chemists/chemical engineers worldwide.

 

The 12 awardees were selected based on excellence in basic or applied research, distinguished accomplishments in teaching or education, or demonstrated leadership or managerial excellence in the chemical sciences.

 

Al Bawab, who is a professor of physical chemistry at UJ, held the position of general director of the Jordan Scientific Research Support Fund (2014- 2016) at the Ministry of Higher Education & Scientific Research, as well as many other positions at the university.

 

Al-Bawab is the recipient of many honorary awards, including the Women in Science Hall of Fame – 2014, presented by the US Embassy in Jordan; Arab Women Award in Science and Technology for Development  2011 of the Arab Women; and the Distinguished Researcher Award 2011 from UJ.

 

IUPAC was formed in 1919 by chemists from industry and academia and is recognized as the world authority on chemical nomenclature, terminology, standardized methods for measurement, atomic weights and many other critically evaluated data.
