2nd National Water-Energy Nexus Conference Kicks off

The 2nd National Conference on Water and Energy Nexus Kicked off at the Dead Sea on Wednesday under the patronage of Prime Minister Bisher Al Khasawneh.


The two-day conference is organized by the University of Jordan (UJ), the Ministry of Water and Irrigation-Water Authority, and the Jordanian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources.


Deputizing for the Prime Minister, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Hala Zawati, in her address, emphasized the importance of enhanced cooperation between water and energy sectors, for food security and Jordan’s sustainable development.


In turn, UJ President Professor, Nathir Obeidat, confirmed that UJ is concerned with water, energy and environment research, and has actively contributed to dialogue arose around it, indicating that the need to link research findings of water and energy research based on the correlation between the two sectors had been a drive to establish a comprehensive research center on water, energy and environment at UJ.


Conference Coordinator and UJ professor of renewable energy, Professor Ahmed Al Salaymeh, said that this conference is a response to the emerging needs, opportunities, and challenges in the water and energy fields and aims to stimulate dialogue between the energy and water sectors in Jordan and transfer the best practices from Europe to Jordan and the region.


The conference is supported by the Renewable Energy Project in the Water Sector, implemented by the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) and commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development.


The event was attended by the Secretary General of the Ministry of Water and Irrigation Jihad Al Mahamid, Ambassador of the European Union Maria Hadjitheodosiou and Charge d’Affaires of the German Embassy to Jordan Florian Reindel, as well as representatives from the Arab League and a number of diplomats, officials and specialists.
