UJ Students Debate with Ambassadors of Europe Countries to Jordan

The ambassadors of the European Union, France, Sweden, Greece and Spain to the Kingdom conversed, on Tuesday, with students at Prince Hussein bin Abdullah II School of International Studies the roles of women in diplomacy and international relations.


This came during a debate entitled "Women and Diplomacy" organized by the School in cooperation with the French Embassy on the occasion of the International day for women’s rights and within the framework of the French Presidency of the EU and moderated by Political Participation Specialist at UN Women, Bushra Abu Shahout.


The event also hosted the former Jordanian diplomat and Rapporteur of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Senate, Dr. Alia Bouran who spoke about her career transition from academia to diplomacy, becoming Jordan's first female ambassador to Belgium in 2000, and then Jordan's first female ambassador to the United Kingdom, and later to Washington, stressing that she drew her strength as a woman from her mother and her family's support.


In his opening remakes, Dean of the School, Prof. Faisal Al-Rufou’, commended cooperation between the university and the embassies of the participating countries, stressing the capability of women to play leading roles in diplomacy.

French Ambassador to Jordan, Veronique Voland-Enni, stressed the importance of the event in inspiring female students to pursue a diplomatic career, and shred her background and experience as a women diplomat.


The debate was followed by one-to-one exchanges between the students and women working in diplomacy from the embassies of France, Germany, Sweden, Romania, Netherlands, Austria and Italy.
