UJ’s Celebration on International Year of Light & Light-Based Technologies 2015 Concludes

The Department of Physics at UJ on Wednesday, March 30, marked the conclusion of a series of events that were held to highlight the importance of light and optical technologies in our lives and for the future.

 

The celebration, organized by Lambda physics group at UJ under the theme : “Light Up with Physics”, was part of the worldwide celebration of the International Year of Light and Light-Based Technologies 2015 (IYL 2015).

 

The conclusion ceremony of the IYL 2015 activities was attended by the Pakistani Prof. Tasawar Hayat and featured the announcement of the winners of the “Light” Challenge and the launch of the LAMBDA group’s website: http://science.ju.edu.jo/en/lambda/Home.aspx


Moreover, the year 2015 also marks the 1000th anniversary since the appearance of the remarkable seven volume treatise on optics “Kitab al-Manazir” by the famous Arab scientist Ibn al-Haytham.

 

Commemorating ibn al-Haytham who is known as the ‘Father of Optics’, the Department of Physics has decided to name the light laboratory at the faculty “ibn al-Haytham laboratory”.

 

On 20 December 2013, the United Nations (UN) General Assembly 68th Session proclaimed 2015 as the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies (IYL 2015).

 

This International Year has been the initiative of a large group of scientific organizations together with UNESCO.
